2018 Fall Events for Kids and Teens

Monday, September 10 – Thursday, November 1
Fall Story Times for toddlers and preschoolers will start on Monday, September 10 and run until Thursday, November 1. Registration is required, parents or caregivers of children may register in person at the Library or by calling 734-426-4477. Space is limited so registration will be on a first come first served basis. 

Children 18 months to 3 years of age may sign up for one Toddler Story Time. Toddler Story Times are held on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10:30 am. Children under 18 months may attend, however books and activities are geared for toddlers. Children 3 to 5 years of age may sign up for one Preschool Story Time. Preschool Story Times are held on Mondays or Tuesdays at 11:30 am.  Combined Toddler/Preschool Story Times will be offered on Wednesdays at 11:30 a.m. Drop-In Story Times for all ages will be offered on Thursdays at 10:30 am in the lower level meeting room from September 13 to November 1.  Infants are welcome at story times with their siblings.  Parents or caregivers are required to attend. Each session lasts approximately 30 minutes.

Fall Story Times for children include picture, pop-up and interactive books, flannel-board stories, songs, puppets, finger plays, crafts and other activities that encourage a love of reading to your child.

All Star Readers Book Club
This is a book discussion group for kids in grades 3 through 5.  This month we’re reading The World According to Humphrey by Betty G. Birny.  Registration begins Thursday, September 20.

Tween Book Club
Join our new Tween Book Club for 5th and 6th graders.  Read the book and be prepared to answer trivia questions for a chance to win a prize. We’ll also discuss the book and enjoy a snack. Stop by the youth reference desk for a copy of this month’s book:  The Shadows (Books of Elsewhere #1) by Jacqueline West.

Wild Swan Theater Presents Frog and Toad
Wild Swan Theater continues its tradition of bringing the finest professional theater to families with Frog and Toad, an enchanting production especially created for little theater goers.  Based on Arnold Lobel’s wonderful stories by the same name, Frog and Toad will captivate children of all ages.  Kids will recognize some of the dramatized episodes, such as Toad’s efforts to hurry along his garden by speaking poetry to his seeds, or the difficulties Frog and Toad face trying not to eat ALL the delicious cookies Toad has baked.   Registration is not required, everyone is welcome.

Makerspace
This is a drop-In program for grades K through 8.  Make, build, craft and explore.  Participate in a variety of open-ended activities.  We supply the materials and you supply the imagination. Registration is not required.

Friday, October 26 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm
Flu Shot Clinic
The Dexter Pharmacy will visit the Library to provide flu shots.  No appointments are necessary. Be sure to bring your insurance information.  The Pharmacy will process insurance on site and follow up with any billing.  The Clinic will take place in the Library’s Lower Level Meeting Rooms.

Magic: The Gathering (MTG)
Teens in grades 6 through 12 are invited to join us for monthly MTG games and pizza.  Prizes awarded to top players.  Co-sponsored with SRSLY Dexter.

Saturday, October 27 at 11:00 am
Halloween Story Time and Craft
Join us for 30 minutes of stories and music celebrating Halloween.  Geared for children ages six and under but everyone is welcome.  A simple craft will be provided following the program.  Registration is not required.

Ukulele Club

Teens in grades 5 through 12 are invited to try out one of our ukuleles, learn basic cords and song structure from a professional, or bring your own ukulele to play and share your knowledge.  All levels welcome, including beginners.  Light refreshments provided.

First Tuesday Lego Club

Kids in grades K through 8 are invited to spend an afternoon making their own Lego creations while visiting with old friends and making new ones.  Everyone is welcome – Legos will be provided by the Library.  Registration is not required.

Movie & Popcorn for Kids
Sherlock Gnomes (2018)
Garden gnomes, Gnomeo & Juliet, recruit renowned detective Sherlock Gnomes to investigate the mysterious disappearance of other garden ornaments. Rated PG – 86 minutes

Super Stories Book Club

This is a book appreciation group for kids who are going into grades K through 2.  We’ll share stories, have snacks and do activities.  This month’s theme is “Science”.  Registration is required beginning Thursday, October 11.

DIY Cricut® Crafts
All adults, teens and tweens in grades 5 and up are invited to learn how to make decals and iron-on transfers using the Library’s Cricut® machine.  Bring a t-shirt, tote bag, water bottle or anything else you’d like to embellish.  Registration is required, experience is not necessary.  Call 734-426-4477 to register.

Teens in grades 7 through 12 are invited to attend this special meeting to learn about volunteer opportunities available at the Library this summer.  Registration is required.  Pizza lunch will be provided.

Children ages five and under, along with their caregivers, are invited to make, create and play at the Library.  Children will explore a variety of stations with open-ended activities designed to encourage early learning.  Registration is not required.  Caregivers must stay with their children.
