Become a Reading Superhero This Summer at Dexter District Library
This year the Dexter District Library has, once again, planned a wide variety of educational, entertaining and fun programs to help you fill your summer days. Summer is one of the busiest times around the Library and everyone is invited to join our summer reading programs for children, teens and adults. Read for fun all summer and enter our Grand Prize Drawing for some amazing prizes. Summer is a great time to read for pleasure or pick up that book you have been meaning to read. The Library’s programs and events are here to help you enjoy the upcoming relaxing days.
This year’s children’s program, “Every Hero Has a Story” will run from June 12 until August 7. Children may register for the Reading Club anytime during the summer. Registration involves filling out a reading record and setting a reading goal. The reading goal can be a certain number of books read over the summer or an amount of time spent reading each week. Children who cannot read yet may participate with a parent or caregiver by signing up for the Read-To-Me program. Reading records will be kept at the Library so children can keep track of their progress. Each week a small prize is given to every child who comes into the Library to record the books they have read. Children who meet their reading goal by August 9 will receive a book bag full of surprises and an entry in the Grand Prize Drawing which will be held on August 10.
The program will start on Friday, June 12 at 11:00 a.m. with the 21st Annual Summer Reading Program Kick-off Party. Join us as Comedian/Magician Doug Scheer presents “The Magic Book Shelf”. Comedy and magic, kids love it but sometimes they don’t realize that magic is everywhere, especially in the library. This 45 minute program, full of hilarious comedy and audience participation is for all ages and will be followed by a couple of surprise superheroes and refreshments at the Farmers Market.
The Teen Summer Reading Program Kick-Off will also be on Friday, June 12 at 11:00 a.m. Sign up for our “Unmask!” tween and teen program and enjoy some free refreshments at the Farmer’s Market while you’re here. Each week, teens in grades six and up will be asked to read three hours or more to receive a Weekly Prize Drawing entry ticket. Participate all eight weeks to qualify for the Grand Prize Drawing and receive a free book bag full of school supplies, snacks and other surprises. Attend any Teen SRP event for additional Weekly Prize Drawing tickets.
Kids aren’t the only ones having fun at the Library this summer. Adults can sign up for the Adult Summer Reading Program, “Escape the Ordinary”, beginning Friday June 12. Anyone 18 and over can register at the second floor Adult Reference Desk. For eight weeks this summer, the participants will chart their reading progress. Programs and events will be offered each week during the summer and readers who complete their reading goals will be eligible for prizes at the end of the eight weeks. This program is open to all adults ages 18 and up, but families are welcome to attend all of the special programs that are featured as part of the Adult Summer Reading Program line up. Come join us for unique programs, fun movies and great reading. This summer let us help you “Become a Reading Superhero” at Dexter District Library.
Join us for Drop-In Story Times June 15 through August 6. Throughout the summer, the Library will hold Story Times on Mondays and Thursdays at 11:00 a.m. Story Time is geared for children ages 6 and younger but all ages are welcome to attend one or both sessions. Daycare centers may attend Summer Story Times but are asked to arrive early. This is a good opportunity to introduce your child to Library story times in an effort to prepare them for our regular fall, winter and spring sessions that have limited space and require registration. Story Times at the Library include picture and pop-up books, flannel-board stories, songs, dancing, finger plays, crafts and other activities that bring the fun of reading to your child. No registration is necessary for Summer Story Times, which will be held in the lower level meeting room.
In addition to the Summer Reading Program and Drop-In Story Times, the Dexter District Library will offer many adult, teen and school-aged programs, performers, events and activities throughout the summer. Big Truck and Emergency Vehicle Day, one of our most popular summer programs, will be held on Friday, June 26 from 10:00 to Noon in the Library parking lot. Look for a surprise superhero at this year’s event. All of our programs are free and open to everyone. A complete list of upcoming summer events can be picked up at the Library or by visiting our website at www.dexter.lib.mi.us.
The Dexter District Library's Summer Reading Program is made possible by the generous support of numerous local businesses and community service groups that contribute funds and in-kind donations for programs, prizes and supplies. Their support truly helps the Library maintain a well rounded slate of summer events. A complete list of donors will be available at the Library beginning June 12.
