2020 Winter Events for Kids, Tweens and Teens

Monday, January 13
Winter Story Times Begin

Winter Story Times for toddlers and preschoolers will start on Monday, January 13 and run until Thursday, March 5. Registration is required, parents or caregivers of children may register in person at the Library or by calling 734-426-4477. Space is limited so registration will be on a first come first served basis. 

Children 18 months to 3 years of age may sign up for one Toddler Story Time. Toddler Story Times are held on Mondays or Tuesdays at 10:30 am. Children under 18 months may attend, however books and activities are geared for toddlers. Children 3 to 5 years of age may sign up for one Preschool Story Time. Preschool Story Times are held on Mondays or Tuesdays at 11:30 am.   Combined Toddler/Preschool Story Times are held on Wednesdays at 10:30 am, registration is required.

Drop-In Story Times for all ages will be offered on Thursdays at 10:30 am in the lower level meeting room from January 16 to March 5.  Infants are welcome at story times with their siblings.  Parents or caregivers are required to attend. Daycare Centers are welcome to all Drop-In Story Times.  Each session lasts approximately 30 minutes.

Winter Story Times for children include picture, pop-up and interactive books, flannel-board stories, songs, puppets, finger plays, crafts and other activities that encourage a love of reading to your child.

Teens in grades 6 through 12 are invited to join us for monthly MTG tournament-style games and pizza.  Prizes awarded to top players.  Registration is required beginning Friday, December 6. Co-sponsored with SRSLY Dexter.

Drop-In Preschool Makerspace

Children ages five and under, along with their caregivers, are invited to make, create and play at the Library.  Children will explore a variety of stations with open-ended activities designed to encourage early learning.  Registration is not required.  Caregivers must stay with their children.

First Tuesday Lego Club

Kids in grades K through 8 are invited to spend an afternoon making their own Lego creations while visiting with old friends and making new ones.  Everyone is welcome – Legos will be provided by the Library.  Registration is not required.

Super Stories

This is a book appreciation group for grades K through 2.  We’ll share stories, have snacks and do activities.  This month’s theme is “The Zoo”.  Registration is required beginning Thursday, January 9.

Teen Advisory Group (TAG)
Teens in grades 7 through 12 are invited to get involved with the Library by attending our Teen Advisory Group (TAG) meetings.  Help plan programs, organize community service projects, and volunteer at Library events.  This is a great opportunity to build up your resume and obtain volunteer hours.  Registration is required beginning Saturday, January 11, pizza lunch provided.

All Star Readers

This is a book discussion group for kids in grades 3 through 4.  Each month, we will read and discuss a book, have snacks and do activities.  This month we’re reading Nim’s Island by Wendy Orr. Registration is required, beginning Thursday, January 16.

Kids in grades 5 and 6 are invited to read the book and be prepared to answer trivia questions for a chance to win a prize.  Enjoy a snack, and occasionally a craft or game related to the book.  Stop by the Youth Reference Desk for a copy of this month’s book: The Miscalculations of Lightning Girl by Stacy McAnulty.  Registration begins Thursday, January 23.

DIY Heart-Shaped Hand Warmers & Chocolate

Teens and tweens in grades 5 through 12 can keep toasty all winter long with their own heart-shaped hand warmers.  All materials will be provided including delicious chocolate snacks.  Registration begins Monday, January 13.

DIY Mardi Gras Mask Craft
Kids in grades K through 4 are invited to drop by and celebrate Mardi Gras by creating their own party mask using feathers, sequins and colorful jewels.  Registration is not required.

Magic Carpet Theatre

Children of all ages are invited to experience their favorite stories via live theater performances and audience participation. Enjoy “Where the Wild Things Are,” “The Sneeches” and other children’s books while role-playing, creating sound effects and making rhythms along with the Magic Carpet performers.  The focus of the Magic Carpet Theatre performance is to encourage children to use their imaginations so they will become better readers. The presentation is fast-paced with lots of humor and audience involvement.  Performance begins at promptly at 11:00 am, refreshments will be served.  Everyone is welcome.

Dancer’s Edge Presents:  Music and Movement for Toddlers and Preschoolers

Children ages 6 and under, along with their caregiver, are invited to participate in a special dance class with Jennifer Smith of Dancers Edge.  Filled with music, playful interaction and movement, this class is designed for the youngest dancers.  Get ready to wiggle, jump and move to music, props and fun.  Refreshments and a simple craft will be offered following the program.  Registration is not required.
