Winter Events for Children

Winter Break Reading Challenge
Youth and Teens
December 5 – January 6
Registration on Beanstack required

Youth and Teens can complete a variety of reading challenges on Beanstack during their winter break. Sign up on the Beanstack web site or app starting on December 5. Complete at least 10 virtual activity badges by January 6 to be eligible for a prize. Prize pickup will be during the month of January.

 

Drop-In Winter Story Time at the Library
Monday & Thursday mornings at 11:00 am

No registration required

Drop-In Winter Story Time for toddlers and preschoolers will start on Monday, January 16 and run through Thursday, March 9. We will be meeting in the Large Meeting Room on the lower level of the Library.

Story Time will be held on Mondays and repeated on Thursdays at 11:00 am. Books and activities are geared for toddlers and preschoolers. Each program lasts approximately 30 minutes.

Our story times will include picture, pop-up and interactive books, flannel-board stories, songs, puppets, finger plays and other activities that encourage a love of reading.

*Drop-In Story Times may be cancelled if public health conditions change.

Registration for the Winter session of Toddler Story Time and Preschool Story Time begins Monday, January 2. Winter Story Times for toddlers and preschoolers will start on Tuesday, January 17 and run until Wednesday, March 8. Registration is required for Toddler Story Time and Preschool Story Time. Parents or caregivers of children may register on our website through our calendar of events or by calling 734-426-4477. Children may only be registered for one 8-week session. Registration will be on a first come first served basis.

Toddler Story Time will be held on Tuesdays at 10:00 am and repeated on Wednesdays at 10:00 am. Books and activities are geared for children 18 months to 3 years of age. Each program lasts approximately 30 minutes.

Preschool Story Time will be held on Tuesdays at 11:00 am and repeated on Wednesdays at 11:00 am. Books and activities are geared for children 3 to 5 years of age. Each program lasts approximately 30 minutes.

Children under 18 months may attend, however books and activities are geared for toddlers and preschoolers. Infants are welcome at story times with their siblings.  Parents or caregivers are required to attend.

Virtual Cooking Program with A Curious Kitchen
For Young Fives through Grade 4

Registration deadline is Friday, November 25

Join us for a 1-hour virtual cooking class to celebrate the winter holidays from the comfort of your own home! During this hour-long class, students from Young Fives – 4th grade will learn how to create a festive holiday dessert to enjoy with their family.  Chef Jyl Nolan from A Curious Kitchen will help you as we prepare, mix, measure and create a beautiful dessert together!  Please join us for this holiday class, and do something fun together as a family in the kitchen!  Parents will be needed to assist with some tasks in the kitchen.  Families will receive the recipe and list of ingredients 1-week prior to the class. Registration is required on the Dexter District Library’s website. Registration deadline is Friday, November 25. A Zoom link will be sent to registered participants before December 2.

 

Club Create Book Club

Club Create is an independent book club for first and second graders. Each month Ms. Krista will read longer picture books centered on a theme and the group will participate in activities and crafts related to the theme. The December theme is Inventions.

Registration is required. Registration begins Thursday, November 10.

For Young Fives and Kindergartners

Theme:  The 5 Senses

This is a story and craft program held in person at the library for kids transitioning out of story time and into book club. Adults should attend this program with their children. Each month Miss Ruth will read books related to a theme and then the kids will do a theme related craft or activity.

All Star Readers Book Club
Grades 3 – 4

All Star Readers is an independent book club for third and fourth graders.  Each month we will play an icebreaker game, have a book discussion, and do an activity related to the book we discuss. Books will be available to pick up at the library after you register. The December book is Leon the Extraordinary by Jamar Nicholas.

Have you ever thought about what your kids’ biggest dreams and goals are and how they can achieve them? During the Vision Board Creation event we will help kids create their vision by placing photos, powerful quotes, and dream statements on a personalized vision board.

This event aims to inspire and motivate kids to create a vision of who they want to be as a person, where they want to be headed, and to begin thinking about how they are going to make that happen in a very fun, creative way!

KinderConcert!
For ages five and under

Drop-In Program

Children ages five and younger and their caregivers will find that music comes alive during this 30-minute concert.  Don’t worry about wiggly tots sitting still for a concert – they will be encouraged to dance and move while listening to the music, hearing a story being told with musical accompaniment and learning about a special orchestral instrument.  Members of the A2SO lead children on a guided introduction to the instruments of the orchestra.

Space Art with Longway Planetarium

Create beautiful space-themed artworks while learning about the nighttime sky. Build a comet, use liquid water color to paint a starry scene, and learn about eclipses while making a chalk project.
