The Mayans are part of a larger Mesoamerican civilization, defined by the United Nation’s World Heritage Convention as one the six birthplaces of human civilization. This talk will share some of the key aspects of the ancient Mayan society but it will be done primarily as the speaker recounts his travels through the Mayan world over the past ten years. While some locations (Chichen Itza and Tulum) are among the standard tourist destinations in Mexico, most of the sites are a bit off the normal tourist track and some are a bit of adventure to visit.
Perhaps the most interesting feature of this exploration is that knowledge of the Mayan world is in its infancy. In the coming years our rudimentary knowledge of the Maya will be greatly expanded. It is exciting to become a part of that process if only as a spectator.
About the presenter: Jim Craft is a career consultant and local historian. He does research, writing, and presentations at various venues around the country. He is currently working on a series of booklets, having completed two thus far: The Good Roads Movement, 1888-1926, and New York’s Burned-over District.
