RJ Julia presents Lori Tucker-Sullivan

The stories of rock musicians who die young are the thing of lore and legend. Accidents, drug overdoses, plane crashes—all have taken the lives of male rock stars still in their primes. But what became of their widowed brides? How did they survive a loss so great?

Former Dexter resident Lori Tucker-Sullivan spent seven years locating and interviewing the widows of her favorite rock stars after the death of her husband Kevin in 2010. Previous to her life as an author, Lori was known as part of the family that renovated the Henes farmstead in Dexter Township. Named one of the Library Journal’s Best Nonfiction of 2024, I Can’t Remember if I Cried: Rock Widows on Life, Love and Legacy, chronicles fourteen widows of Lori’s favorite rock stars and what they taught her (and can teach all of us) about grief. Though she studied music journalism in college, she took a different path, including purchasing the abandoned farmhouse in Dexter. After Kevin’s passing, she knew that returning to music writing would provide a way forward. Writing the book allowed her to learn about the rock stars she’d have written of, but now through the lens of the women who loved them. In this presentation, Lori will speak about writing the book, share behind-the-scenes stories, and discuss her full-circle path beyond grief to a life of creativity and wonder.

About the presenter: Lori Tucker-Sullivan is a freelance writer and editor whose work has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Modern Loss, and Passages North. Her essays “Detroit, 2015” and “Time, Touch, and a Whale’s Grief” were both nominated for a Pushcart Prize and listed as a Notable Essays in the Best American Essays series. Since her husband’s death, Lori has written of the widowhood experience at the blog The Widow’s Apprenticeship. She is also a former bookselling professional who until recently served as Executive Director of the Independent Booksellers Consortium, Inc. She lives in Detroit, MI.
