We Are Dexter: McCarthyism vs Air Force Lieutenant Milo Radulovich

People always say “It can’t happen here.”  Well, it did and did so right here in Dexter.  In the 1950s, the United States lurched into a murky period of blacklists and witch-hunts for alleged Communists, led by a young Senator named Joseph McCarthy. Destroying lives and reputations with abuses of power, the situation reached a turning point in the case of Air Force Lieutenant Milo Radulovich of Dexter, Michigan. Featured on Edward R. Murrow’s gripping broadcast “See It Now” the case laid bare the abuse of Congressional power and began the end of McCarthyism.  Hosted by Ginny Morgan of Dexter Township, our program will feature the original “See It Now” presentation and special background by Michael Ranville, author of, “To Strike at a King: The Turning Point in the McCarthy Witch-Hunt.”

This program will be in the Library’s lower-level meeting room. Register on the Library’s Events Calendar or call the Library at 734-426-4477 (ext 120)

This program is part of the Dexter District Library’s yearlong Bicentennial program – “We Are Dexter.” Every month from January through December the Library will host a program featuring individuals and groups that make up the Dexter community. These presentations will include artists, authors, musicians and individuals who have a hobby, talent, experience or story that makes them part of the fabric of our town.
