During election seasons, there’s a heightened focus on the importance of democratic engagement in our lives. Whether you’re eager to boost your political savvy for more informed voting, or you’re contemplating a role in public service, it’s essential to grasp the intricacies of municipal governance and the responsibilities of various officeholders. Come along with Sanam Aldag, a Councilmember from the City of Dexter—for a conversation about the functions of various city officials including the Mayor, fellow Councilmembers, City staff, and members of City Committees & Commissions here in Dexter. You’ll gain insights into Dexter’s governing Charter, internal Council Rules, and strategies for embarking on your own journey to contribute to our community in these important roles.
About the Presenter:
Sanam Aldag serves as a Councilmember for the City of Dexter, having initially filled a council vacancy in 2021 before being elected in 2022 to a four-year term. She is a firm believer in the value of community engagement, the power of dialogue and consultation in the decision-making process, and the inclusion of diverse perspectives. Sanam received her degree from the University of Michigan’s School of Information in Archives and Records management, has worked as librarian and archivist, and currently manages a library of audiovisual and computing equipment at the University of Michigan’s College of Literature, Science, and the Arts. Sanam and her team support a large community of over 45,000 faculty, students, and staff with these technological assets.

This program is part of the Dexter District Library’s yearlong Bicentennial program – “We Are Dexter.” Every month from January through December the Library will host a program featuring individuals and groups that make up the Dexter community. These presentations will include artists, authors, musicians and individuals who have a hobby, talent, experience or story that makes them part of the fabric of our town.
