Join us for this Bicentennial story of two cities bound by history and circumstance. Learn about the pedigree – Samuel Dexter – the founder of Dexter, Michigan who was an impressive individual from a prominent early-American family. Judge Dexter received Harvard undergrad and law degrees. His father, also a Harvard graduate, was a U.S. Senator, Secretary of War and Secretary of the Treasury under President John Adams, as well as Secretary of Treasury under President Thomas Jefferson.
Equal time will also be given to the scoundrels – John Allen, originally from Virginia and Elisha Rumsey, originally from New York – who in February of 1824, staked out the site for “Annarbour” becoming the founders of Ann Arbor, Michigan.
About the presenter:
Russell B. Collins is the Executive Director of Michigan Theater Foundation in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Mr. Collins has served as CEO of the Michigan Theater Foundation since 1982. He is an Ann Arbor, Michigan native who received both a Bachelors and Masters Degree (in arts administration) from the University of Michigan. His professional honors include: Professional Theatre Program Fellow of the University of Michigan; Arts Administration Fellow of the National Endowment for the Arts and Knighted by Republic of Italy as “Calvaliere nell’Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana.” Locally, he has served on the: Downtown Development Authority’s Board of Directors; Michigan Humanities Council Board of Directors; State Street Area Association Board of Directors; Ann Arbor Area Chamber of Commerce and the Ann Arbor Convention and Visitors Bureau

This program is part of the Dexter District Library’s yearlong Bicentennial program – “We Are Dexter.” Every month from January through December the Library will host a program featuring individuals and groups that make up the Dexter community. These presentations will include artists, authors, musicians and individuals who have a hobby, talent, experience or story that makes them part of the fabric of our town.
