Alzheimers Series (Part 1): Alzheimers, Disease Not a Disgrace

Date:
Wednesday, 09/11/2019
Time: 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Category:

Every minute, another American develops Alzheimer’s. However, many people know little about this disease, or about the resources available to help deal with it. So people living with dementia and their care partners often feel isolated, helpless, shunned.

There is no disgrace in Alzheimer’s, and no one, and no family, need deal with it alone.

Certified Dementia Friend, Jim Mangi, PhD, will present a talk to help people and families learn about the disease, how to recognize it, acquire caregiving skills, and get help. He’ll do this within the narrative of his own 11-year long – so far – “Unwelcome Journey™”,  caring for Kathleen, his wife of many talents and interests, after she developed younger onset Alzheimer’s at age 58.

Jim will tell about swimming in the Egyptian River – Denial, then learning to lovingly lie, and growing ever closer to Kathleen even as she forgot who he was. Expect factual information, insight, a few laughs, and perhaps some tears. There will be a Q & A time. Free literature from the Alzheimer’s Association and the National Institutes of Health will be available, plus information on support resources.

This program is Part 1 of a 5 part series on Alzheimers & Dementia presented by Jim Mangi, PhD, in conjunction with the Washtenaw County Alzheimers Association.

Other talks in the series will be:

September 25, Wednesday, 7:00 p.m. (Part 2) – Understanding Alzheimers and Dementia

October 9, Wednesday, 7:00 p.m. (Part 3) – Effective Communication Strategies

October 30, Wednesday, 7:00 p.m. (Part 4) – Conversations about Dementia

November 6, Wednesday, 7:00 p.m. (Part 5) – Envisioning a Dementia Friendly Community

All programs are approximately 1 hour with Q & A time at the end. Registration suggested, but not mandatory.  To register call the library at 734-426-4477.  All are welcome to attend.
